2005 - James Elliot Walker

James Elliot Walker, eldest son of Liveryman Marshall Walker and Marjorie Eva (Joy) Walker, was born in London on 10th December 1950. He was educated at Langley School, Norwich and in later life Middlesex University, where he studied for an MBA. Having played rugby union at a senior level for Saracens, James became an active vice president of his local rugby club. He was apprenticed to Arthur Tristram, a Chartered Auctioneer, in 1968 and went on to work in the West End offices of Hampton & Sons. In 1972 he left to join David Shaw and Partners and in 1975 was appointed Assistant Property Manager at Securicor. In 1979 he became Property Manager at Barratt Developments and subsequently a Director of several of their subsidiary companies. James was responsible for all aspects of the company’s portfolio except volume house building. In 1985 James formed the Barkway Group, specialising in refurbishing commercial and residential buildings and commercial property management. In 1994 he purchased the Cock Inn, Hadleigh, Suffolk and went on to build up a portfolio of seven freehold public houses in Suffolk together with a wholesale drinks distribution company. In 2004 he sold a number of his interests to concentrate on his year as Master. In early 2006 he took an interest in a public house management company, which he runs in combination with his remaining two public houses.
