As I reflect on a very special year I wonder how a report on it might be interesting for readers and the records of the Livery. It should not be a long winded diary of the year so I have attached the personal diary I made over the year, comprising the 115 events, meetings etc. attended. Also I attach my Curriculum Vitae which was used by our Clerk, Robin House, to tell other companies and hosts something about the 2014 Master. It is therefore my intention to focus on the especially interesting features of my year rather than the regular events and business of our Livery. Every Master’s year has a rather unique characteristic and in 2014 there was much reflection and information about the event 100 years earlier: being the outbreak of the Great War.
The year started brilliantly for me because I was installed by my old friend, Tim Waller, who had enjoyed a splendid year. I have decided to make this report under separate headings rather than chronologically and I hope the reader will find this digestible.
I began my banking career in Lloyd's Bank and after 25 years, principally in commercial and residential property financing, my entrepreneurial spirit enabled me to build up investment interests both in the UK and Eastern Europe.
I was born in Oban, Argyllshire, in the West Highlands of Scotland in 1921. My father had moved from Buckinghamshire to Oban in 1914 to become Headmaster of the School attached to the Episcopalian Cathedral of St. John the Divine, where he was also appointed Organist and Choir Master.
